Our First Generation Olive Eggers (F1 OE) are a cross between our Black Copper Marans and Self Blue Ameraucanas, and they really possess the qualities of both.
All of our F1 OE hens have black plumage, beards and muffs, pea combs, and feathered shanks and toes. They also all lay eggs that are various shades of olive green. Some eggs are speckled and some even have a heavy bloom that gives them a gray, silver, or slate blue appearance.
Our F1 OE roosters also have muffs and beards, pea combs, and feathered shanks and toes, and black plumage with copper or gold highlights.
In terms of temperament, our F1 OE birds fall somewhere between their two parents. They are friendly, calm, and steady, neither as outgoing as our Marans nor as shy as our Ameraucanas.
If you’re wondering how this cross lays a green egg:
Ameraucanas lay a blue egg, and the blue pigment is added to the actual eggshell early in the egg creation process. Marans lay a dark brown egg, but the brown pigment is not part of the eggshell itself, but a coating applied on the surface right before the egg is laid. A first generation Olive Egger inherits BOTH of these traits, and the dark brown coating applied over a blue eggshell results in an olive egg!
