Marans are a hardy dual purpose breed that originated in France. They are known for the dark brown eggs they produce, but they are so much more than a pretty egg.

No (egg) shade to our other breeds, but our Black Copper Marans are the smartest birds on the farm. They are also outgoing and curious. Our Marans roosters are energetic, alert, and great protectors of the flock, while our hens are friendly, assertive, and even a little sassy. Since they don't tend to go broody, they are reliable layers all season.

Marans are highly food motivated and have a strong foraging instinct, and therefore don’t tolerate confinement as well as our other breeds. They benefit from opportunities to free range, and extra stimulation when living in an enclosed space.

The Marans in your flock will be the first to run to the coop door when you open it to investigate and say hello before they brush right past you to play outside. Of all the breeds we offer, they are most likely to be at the top of the pecking order.

Our Marans have great copper coloring and feathered shanks and toes. We continually work on egg color, too, and our birds generally lay from 4-6 on the egg color scale.

“I consider myself beyond spoiled to have Silver Fox Farm in such close proximity that I can pick up my chickens. We ordered chickens from another large hatchery and 16 chicks from Maeg and Sarah. The difference was downright shocking. The chicks we received from Silver Fox were healthy, vigorous and incredibly carefully packed. The care they take in literally every single aspect of breeding these chickens; from selectively choosing for health and temperament, the actual care they take of the chickens and hatching the chicks, is evident in the end result. My flock is lovely and healthy and all survived whereas we lost nearly 30% of our other chicks. Their commitment to raising and breeding chickens is beyond compare and their patience with me as a first time chicken mom was incredible. The guides and newsletters were all immensely helpful. You simply cannot get better chickens anywhere else.” - Lindsey Baird, Oak & Ash Farm
"Maeg was incredibly helpful throughout the purchase process. We purchased six Black Copper Marans in May ‘20 and couldn’t be happier. They are happy and healthy laying the most beautiful, deep brown color eggs imaginable." - John - Holden, Massachusetts

At Silver Fox Farm...

Our birds are fed 100% organic feed.
Using a clan mating system, we breed for health, temperament, and the Standard of Perfection.
Our flocks live in spacious coops and runs or tractors, and enjoy access to seasonal pasture or fresh greens.
Unlike many large scale hatcheries that cull male chicks at hatch, we love and value our roosters, and grow all of them out to maturity.
